Hunger

Hunger is the worst killer in third world countries.
25,000 people die every day due to hunger!!!!
(one person every three and a half seconds)
Even though there is enough food in the world for everyone the poor are left to suffer just because they don't have enough money to buy food. Instead of buying food to eat(if they ever get any!) they usually have to grow crops. No one in those really poor countries though knows how to grow crops anyway and above all they don't have enough water to keep their crops alive. If some villagers are lucky, they might get the ocasional feed of meat.

Why have i chosen to do Poverty???

I have chosen the issue of Poverty because I really feel strongly about it and I think that people can make a difference.

This issue affects me emotionally, as I think it unjust that 1 in 2 children in the world have no choice but to live in Poverty. Even though it makes me feel lucky that i'm not poor, I feel appalled at the conditions that people in third world countries live in. I am also really ashamed that richer countries take advantage of the poor ones and use for example cheap/child labour.

My choice has been influenced by a personal experience. My family sponsors children in third world countries, and i have seen the difference it can make. These children don't even have access to safe water!!!

Poverty is a huge issue and i would like to know more about what we can do to help.

What is Poverty???

Poverty is a lack of money, which leads to a

  • lack of food
  • lack of education
  • no access to clean water
  • no proper shelter and
  • no access to medical services/treatment

The united nations believe that money alone does not guarantee that you will live a productive life, but it does give you more choices and opportunities. This also gives you a chance of a better life.

Who does Poverty affect???

In every county in the world, Poverty exists, but it mostly occurs in third world countries. It affects whole communities.

Nearly 1 billion people entered the 21st century, without being able to read a book, or sign their names!

1 in 2 children in the world have to live in poverty, 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe drinking water and 270 million have no access to health services. In 2003, roughly around 29 thousand children died every day!!!!

On an emotional level, it is hard to accept that they have to live this way.

Which countries suffer the most from Poverty???

These are the countries that are said to be living 60% or lower under the national Poverty line.

Mozambique, Mali, Comoros, Chad, Suriname, Niger, Zambia, Nigeria, Angola and Zimbabwe.

How can we help stop Poverty???

People can help stop Poverty in many ways. Some of them are:

1. Sponsoring a child, which not only helps that one child, it helps that child's whole family and sometimes that child's whole community!!!

2. If you ever get a chance to, go visit the third world country that your sponsor child lives in and live their way for a few days to see what it is like. it would also be a very good experience to meet your sponsor child.

3. My last way that we can help stop Poverty, is to get one of the catalogues that are advertising things that you can buy for people in third world countries. Even just buying one thing, can help someone. For me, even just helping one person makes me feel good.
